From garage to world market leader: 30 years of SIP Scootershop

It's been 30 years since we founded SIP Scootershop in a garage. The first goods were stored between Alex's father's beehives. In the absence of employees, we took the parcels to the post office ourselves on a Vespa. Those were the days ...

A lot has happened in the past three decades: We've made a lot of right decisions and a few wrong ones. We have met people who have become friends. We have been able to look at the topic of "scooters" from many different angles. There were exhausting moments when we sat in front of the keyboard in the cold former barracks in Erpftinger Straße at two o'clock in the morning, wearing jackets and gloves, and came up with descriptive texts for the next catalog. There were moments of great happiness, for example on road trips with friends and colleagues, when we arrived at the seaside after 1000 km of driving, with road dirt on our faces, and toasted with an ice-cold beer. We laughed, brooded, celebrated and mourned together. This chronicle tells these stories, shows milestones in SIP's history and reports on the big and small things that have made us the company we are today. In the future, we would also like to manage the balancing act that has been important to us over the last 30 years: on the one hand, to be an efficient, modern company and, on the other, to be an authentic, honest family business. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all our employees for their commitment and passion. We would also like to thank all our customers for their trust and loyalty to our brand over the years. Without you, there would be no SIP Scootershop.

The last five years have been characterized by the global coronavirus pandemic, but thanks to our dedicated employees, loyal customers and reliable suppliers, we have survived without major damage. The crisis hotspots on this planet also influence our business activities, as SIP Scootershop is not decoupled from global developments. On the contrary: CEO Ralf Jodl visited business partners and friends in the USA, Australia, Thailand and the Philippines in early 2024 to get an overview of the current situation on the scooter market. Ralf sums up his Vespa & Lambretta World Tour: "Even though the scooter scenes and their demographics are very different from country to country, it was inspiring to experience the passion for Lambretta and Vespa on the different continents. This motivates us for the coming decades!"

What is the current focus of SIP Scootershop?

Our core business is and remains the service for our customers and the availability of thousands of items relating to modern and classic Vespa and Lambretta. We are also keeping an eye on the e-bike and e-scooter markets and we will not ignore the boom in electric scooters. "Times are changing and customers' needs have changed over the years. SIP Scootershop has to adapt if we want to be equipped for the coming years," analyzes CEO Alex Barth, "but that doesn't mean that our love for the old Vespas is growing cold." The product developers at SIP Scootershop have many projects in their drawers and on their hard drives. The company's own SIP Pordoi, SIP Performance, SIP Style and SIP Spareparts series remain important components in the range. New products are released almost daily and can be found in the news section of our website.

Our activities on YouTube, where SIP Scootershop TV enjoys great popularity, are extremely successful. Around 50,000 subscribers are an obligation to continue producing high-quality content, as we have done in the 700 or so videos to date. Useful and instructive tutorials, product presentations and tuning instructions are presented alongside travel reports from our tours and the "Sexiest Workshops" and "Custom Scooter Creations" series. We are approaching 260,000 followers on Facebook and more than 100,000 on Instagram. "We will continue to expand our digital offerings," says Ralf, looking ahead, "including the blogs on our website. An extensive Scooter Modelbase is still under construction. An online reference work where we would like to have all the scooter models in the world stored with all the information at some point."

Personal contact with the scene and customers has always been important to us. The flagship store with adjoining Italian restaurant "Siperia" in Landsberg still serves as a contact point and meeting place for scooter riders from all over Germany and beyond. Once a month, friends of horsepower meet at our performance test bench, while connoisseurs can enjoy fine Italian food and drinks at the "Aperitivo" next door. It will be "loud and dirty" again this year at "Matscho Karatscho #3". On July 27, 2024, cross-scooters will once again race around our in-house track and provide a real spectacle. From April, our employees will be swarming out in all directions to visit scooter-related events and meetings in half of Europe. And last but not least, the Open Day on May 18 will be the highlight of the year, as we celebrate 30 years of SIP Scootershop with you.

Even after more than 30 years in the scooter scene, it's the people who keep Alex and Ralf going. It's the friendships, gasoline conversations and rides. "I'm still keen on the whole subject and am fascinated by the solidarity of scooter fans all over the world," says Ralf and his partner adds: "After three decades of SIP, I'm still keen on the latest parts, whether from small or large suppliers. Once you've been infected with the Vespa virus, you'll never let go of this passion."
