A core task that is solved extremely efficiently with the ImageStation® photogrammetry environment is the precise, interactive capture of 3D objects, the entire infrastructure, such as buildings, roads and bridges, but also natural terrain features. With the flexible and sophisticated ImageStation® photogrammetry environment from the Swedish measurement technology and software company HEXAGON, particularly large volumes of aerial image, UAS and satellite data can be efficiently processed, managed and used for geodata acquisition.

In Germany, topographic surveying and updating or updating the entire infrastructure is the responsibility of the state surveying offices. ImageStation® was specially developed for professional users in photogrammetry and cartography and provides a comprehensive set of data acquisition tools. In order to be able to move intuitively and measure precisely in this stereoscopic three-dimensional reality, an important control element was integrated into the high-tech software right from the start: the 3D stereo mouse cursor. The stereoscopic mouse cursor implementation is the prerequisite for working with precise 3D controllers and enables perfect interaction with the plug & play compatible and powerful 3D PluraView monitor systems from Schneider Digital. The passive 3D monitors from Schneider Digital, which are based on beam splitter technology, impress with pixel-perfect visualization of up to 4K per stereo channel, fast image build-up, high colour depth, high brightness and contrast values.

The fact that the powerful ImageStation® software application is compatible with this professional hardware and thus meets all the requirements of international workplace standards is confirmed by Schneider Digital's certification of HEXAGON: two compatible cutting-edge technologies that merge to form a complete solution and represent an ideal combination for professional photogrammetry users.

The acquisition and updating of topographic geoinformation data is a complex task from a scientific, technical and organizational point of view. The comprehensive photogrammetry solutions from the Swedish measurement technology and software company HEXAGON support users worldwide in the acquisition, management and evaluation of multi-temporal, static and dynamic geodata. HEXAGON has further developed the ImageStation® software application to convert particularly large volumes of raw data into easy-to-use and usable information. This modern application incorporates more than 40 years of photogrammetric know-how, ranging from analytical stereoplotters to a complete software suite for digital photogrammetry, including a perfect stereoscopic 3D cursor implementation.

Smooth GIS workflow

With its photogrammetry solutions, HEXAGON ensures a seamless workflow in the processing of high-resolution image data and geocoded CAD and GIS content from project start to project completion. In classic aerial photogrammetry, project blocks are flown in laterally overlapping image strips, whereby image overlaps of up to 90% are also realized in the direction of flight and image succession rates of 0.7 seconds represent the current state of the art. With the simultaneous recording of oblique aerial images, over 3 GB of image data can be generated for each pixel. Project blocks with over 50,000 triggering stations and 5 cm ground resolution for urban spaces are now feasible and 'calculable' with over 150 TB of raw data volume.

Users of the ImageStation® software suite benefit from the many interactive stereo features of this powerful photogrammetry application, smooth roaming, dynamic zoom and real-time image enhancement integrated directly into the GIS or CAD environment. The ability to perform stereo and mono compilation directly in a GIS environment enables direct comparison with and seamless continuation of existing GIS datasets, significantly increasing efficiency. This not only saves valuable time and resources, but also reduces the cost of creating topologically correct 3D data.

3D cursors integrated into software applications

HEXAGON has perfectly implemented a professional, stereoscopic 3D cursor in ImageStation®. This functionality enables users to navigate intuitively and smoothly and to capture 3D objects precisely with their real XYZ coordinates. In addition to the management programs, the Photogrammatic Manager (ISPM) and ImageStation® Image Formatter (ISIF), the applications with integrated 3D cursor function include ImageStation® ImageStation® Automatic Triangulation (ISAT), ImageStation® Satellite Triangulation (ISST), ImageStation Feature Collection (ISFC), ImageStation® Stereo Display (ISSD), ImageStation® Stereo for GeoMedia (ISSG), ImageStation® Stereo Viewer GeoMedia (ISSV), ImageStation® DTM Collection (ISDC), ImageStation® DTM for GeoMedia (ISDG) and ImageStation® Automatic Elevations (ISAE). The ImageStation® Automatic Elevations DSM (ISAD) and ImageStation OrthoPro (ISOP) calculation programs run automatically, as well as computer-aided editing and quality control with ImageStation® DTMQue (ISDQ) and ImageStation® PixelQue (ISPQ).

Process geodata quickly and precisely

The digital, photogrammetric ImageStation® software suite is used worldwide. It is used in particular by national surveying offices and by users in industries such as aviation, shipping and national defense. With ImageStation®, geodata can be analyzed quickly, efficiently and cost-effectively. For example, the ImageStation Stereo Display (ISSD) application supports the display and processing of stereo images with photogrammetrically accurate 3D cursor tracking. ISSD accepts aerial or satellite data, images from drone (UAS) projects, as well as from Leica ADS 3-line cameras. The ImageStation® Suite enables automatic and dynamic adjustment of image brightness and contrast in the MicroStation and GeoMedia environment. ImageStation®'s exclusive ImagePipe technology is also responsible for smooth stereo roaming, providing the perfect image display essential for efficient stereo compilation.

Stereoscopic geospatial data acquisition and processing

HEXAGON ImageStation® Stereo for GeoMedia (ISSG) is based on the GeoMedia GIS information system and provides a comprehensive range of intelligent compilation tools for the user. This powerful software environment allows access to virtually any geodatabase and version of geodata. This software application displays aerial, satellite and UAS data in an intelligent GIS environment with multiple, freely configurable mono or stereo windows. Like ImageStation Stereo Display (ISSD) and MicroStation, ISSG supports the display and editing of stereo images with photogrammetrically accurate 3D cursor tracking. ISSG offers many practical tools for the interactive acquisition and updating of geodata and enables both the interactive updating of geometry and attributes of 3D objects, as well as automatic attribution and geometry validation. Geodata generated in this way can be saved in an open database format so that third parties can access it seamlessly with their GIS systems.

The creation of digital surface models (DOM) from optical stereo data is also part of the ImageStation® Suite's range of services. The software application presents topographical data, both raster and vector-based, in such a clear way that it is easy to edit and efficient to use. With the help of a 'Snap Cursor', which attaches the stereo cursor to the respective feature, a quick check of the correct object selection is possible. The "Elevation" command is used to create contour lines interactively. Vertical indexing is used to individually adjust and calibrate the user's perception of depth.

Full performance through 3D stereo visualization

The razor-sharp, three-dimensional generation and display of geometric and georeferenced models in the form of dense point clouds is based on computationally intensive reconstruction algorithms. The key to perfect 3D stereo visualization for this professional GIS application is provided by the 3D PluraView monitors from Schneider Digital, the world's leading specialist for stereoscopic 3D desktop visualization solutions. The beamsplitter technology meets the highest system requirements in the areas of 4K, 3D and VR/AR and can display geographical map material and high-resolution GIS data in perfect 3D stereo quality. The high brightness and contrast, the full resolution for each stereo channel thanks to two screens and the complete absence of flicker guarantee a perfect 3D stereo experience and make it easier to analyze and edit 3D content. The 3D PluraView monitor displays 3D objects clearly even in dark areas of the image and eliminates blurring in moving images thanks to a latency-free, fully synchronized display of the two stereo channels.

ImageStation® certified for the 3D PluraView monitor

This cutting-edge technology from Schneider Digital, which has been tried and tested for 14 years, is 'plug & play' certified for photogrammetry and GIS and is perfectly compatible with the ImageStation® software application. The compatibility of the ImageStation® software suite with the 3D PluraView monitor family has now been officially certified by the manufacturer Schneider Digital. The seal of approval assures that the combination of the 3D PluraView hardware with the software application meets the high requirements of international standards in terms of quality and workplace ergonomics. For an optimal photogrammetric workflow, the ImageStation® offers a fully integrated software solution with the corresponding hardware components. In addition to the 3D PluraView monitor, these are the powerful Intel and AMD Threadripper-based workstations, the professional RTX graphics cards from NVIDIA and Radeon Pro graphics cards from AMD, and of course the Stealth 3D controllers, which are used in conjunction with the native implementation of the stereoscopic mouse cursor in Hexagon ImageStation® to control 3D objects and measure them with spatial precision.

Hexagon users thus benefit from a complete 3D workstation solution that guarantees smooth, virtual performance at the highest level. Everything is so perfectly matched to the professional software application that its performance can be utilized to the full and leads to maximum productivity thanks to convenient stereo viewing and stereo measurement. ImageStation® thus comprehensively covers the high requirements of photogrammetric geodata processing. Josef Schneider, CEO of Schneider Digital, is delighted with this perfect interplay of two cutting-edge technologies: "Hardware and software are like body and soul. Our 3D monitors not only make 3D data visible, but also usable.
