Napa Valley Register: Sunday, the Traditional Day of Rest, Can

The Napa Valley Register is a daily newspaper located in Napa, CA, with both a print and online edition. On August 28, 2023, an article was published that expressed the importance of people taking time off to rest. It highlighted the physical and mental benefits that rest can provide and stated that taking a day off was essential for a healthy lifestyle and for the greater good in our world. The only problem was that the newspaper had also noted that "Sunday" was the "traditional day of rest, after all."

The newspaper stated:

• "It's after 10 on a Sunday morning, and the kids (our family of animal pets) are still sleeping, along with my other half. It's all good. This is a traditional day of rest, after all." [1]

• "Every culture on the planet has at least one day of rest and recuperation. Many use that time to recharge spiritually by going to religious services, while others sleep in, watch TV and just give themselves the gift of a lazy day." [1]

• "Everyone needs a break now and then, and a little downtime can work wonders. It doesn't really matter what the activity or inactivity is. The idea is to give your body, mind and heart a chance to relax and recharge. If you keep going at full speed every day, it can be really hard on you, both physically and mentally." [1]

• "The idea here is that by giving ourselves a break and just enjoying a day off, we can make our lives better and actually create greater good in our world than if we are constantly trying to get things done." [1]

Here we have the secular media expressing that we should make a commitment to take time off on the traditional day of rest, Sunday. This action would not just benefit the individual, but more importantly, it would contribute to the well-being of the larger community as a whole. In Laudato Si', Pope Francis makes the same case for a firm adherence to the social teaching of the Catholic Church, which claims that everything is interconnected and that our actions must benefit the entire community.

In fact, the Catholic Catechism, which contains a summary of the teachings and beliefs of the Roman Catholic Church, states that Sunday is connected to the "common good."

"2188 - In respecting religious liberty and the common good of all, Christians should seek recognition of Sundays and the Church's holy days as legal holidays." [2]

We are aware of the prophetic implications when the call is made to observe a day of rest for the benefit of humanity as a whole. In the days to come, efforts will only increase to promote Sunday as a day of worship, rest, family time, and health, as well as its role in advancing the common good in our world. For now, the call to do this is voluntary. Soon it will be mandatory.

"Should our nation abjure the principles of Protestantism, to give countenance and sanction to the Sunday law, they will in this act join hands with popery; for it will be nothing else than giving life to the tyranny which has been eagerly waiting and watching its opportunity to spring into active despotism. And now, as this evil is on the point of realization, it is the business of all believers in the Bible to arouse" (Review and Herald, December 11, 1888).

"We cannot labor to please men who will use their influence to repress religious liberty, and to set in operation oppressive measures to lead or compel their fellow-men to keep Sunday as the Sabbath. The first day of the week is not a day to be reverenced. It is a spurious sabbath, and the members of the Lord's family cannot participate with the men who exalt this day, and violate the law of God by trampling upon His Sabbath" (Gospel Workers, 391).
