Press release from: WMLS Premier League

WMLS Premier League

WMLS Premier League

The WMLS Premier League (Women's Major League Soccer, "WMLS") is excited to announce the formation of its Division 1+ women's pro soccer league that will heavily feature team competition that results in official promotion and relegation. For the first time in history, U.S. soccer will have its own Premier League, complete with promotion and relegation through championship play between 20 licensed WMLS Premier League Member Clubs and Division 2 relegation partners. The WMLS Premier League will be operating on an international playing calendar from August to May with friendly exhibition matches beginning as soon as December 2023.

The launch of WMLS Premier League adds a new dynamic pyramid of play that will bring drama, excitement, and revenue to U.S. women's soccer. WMLS Member Clubs will fight to avoid relegation to keep their place in Division 1+ (notated as 1+ to differentiate from Division 1 standard leagues in U.S. soccer), making it the only U.S. women's soccer league on par with top leagues in Europe, the English Women's Super League, the German Frauen-Bundesliga, F Liga and the French Division 1 Feminine.

WMLS Premier League fans will have the rare opportunity to own a portion (7.14% of teams made available for purchase to fans) of WMLS Premier League teams via a crowdfunding portal link purchase with a reservation deposit ticket of $500 at www.wmls.live/premier-league-teams.

WMLS Premier League, in its planning stages over the past two years, attracted early interest from international football club partners looking to expand their footprint in the lucrative U.S. sports market fueled by their desire to develop relationships with U.S. sponsors and their growing interest in women's soccer. Their WMLS Premier League membership will benefit their current team kit sponsors with increased visibility in the U.S. markets, allowing them to diversify and expand brand awareness as well as tap into U.S. customer bases to drive additional sales and revenue growth.

WMLS Premier League, with its system of promotion and relegation, is predicted to be the most-watched women's sports league in the world, to be broadcast in 212 territories to 643 million homes with a potential TV audience of 4.7 billion people.

The 20 WMLS Premier League teams are: Atlanta, Austin, Baltimore, Boston, Charlotte, Cincinnati, Denver, Des Moines, Detroit, Hollywood, Jersey City, Las Vegas, Miami, Minneapolis, Montreal, Nashville, Philadelphia, Queens, San Juan and Seattle.

"The WMLS will work to ensure that the criteria for promotion and relegation are fair and transparent and that teams have a clear understanding of what they need to do to move up or avoid relegation. This new pyramid of play will revolutionize women's soccer in the United States and help elevate the sport to new heights of sponsorship and broadcast rights worldwide. We're looking forward to hosting Championship Cup partnerships that will provide a new level of excitement to soccer worldwide and will offer Member Club licenses to other Division 1 teams or cities that would like to participate in our official system of promotion and relegation," said Alejandro Bonadeo, Chief Strategy Officer.

WMLS Premier League, with its system of promotion and relegation, is predicted to be one of the most-watched Division 1 women's sports leagues in the world, to be future broadcast in 212 territories to 643 million homes with a potential TV audience of 4.7 billion people. Its 20 WMLS Premier League licensed Member Clubs will be apportioned central payment revenues of its television and sponsorship rights.

"The United States needs a Premier League. It needs to have promotion and relegation. It needs to have a deeper connection with the community. It needs to have real competition." -- Alexi Lalas, former U.S. national team player, and current FOX Sports analyst

"The lack of promotion and relegation is the biggest thing that holds back soccer in the U.S. It creates a sense of complacency and lack of urgency among teams. A Premier League with promotion and relegation would create a more exciting and competitive environment for players and fans alike." -- Grant Wahl, former Sports Illustrated writer
