From technology to sustainability: How Emirati and expat

The UAE has been setting some global benchmarks across multiple sectors and women leaders are at the forefront of many. The competencies of women in this country have also contributed to the UAE's success as a global leader in gender balance. As more and more women continue to emerge as warriors of change and progression, the need to support and celebrate women's empowerment grows bigger.

On the occasion of International Women's Day 2023, Dubai-based leading organization Blue Ocean Corporation conducted an exclusive virtual conference called BOWLD that saw multiple celebrated women figures, both from Emirati and expat backgrounds, coming together to break stereotypes and make way for inclusion and equity.

This year BOWLD or the Blue Ocean Women Leadership Development Conference hosted its 4th edition with "Women empowerment - the key to achieving economic and social sustainability" as its central theme. The conference witnessed the participation of more than two hundred women from all corners of the world. Speakers of global repute like Susie Mackie, Ann Marie McQueen, H.E. Laila Rahhal El Atfani, Mona Al Hebsi, Muna Al Sahlawi Subha Rakesh, amongst others were part of its impactful panel discussions and keynotes that mostly focussed on areas like STEM and AI, and its impact on the lives of women. Emirati biomedical scientist Aida Noor who conducted a workshop on 'How can women thrive in the world of technology' and AI, shared her own experiences and motivated women to shed inhibitions and take charge of their own lives when it comes to experimenting with technology and embracing dynamic innovations like AI.

Along with science and technology, topics like challenges and barriers in women's leadership, diversity, and sustainability also comprised the food for thought at the event. Inspired by this year's campaign, the event also inspired women to call out and 'embrace equity'. Speaker Nadine Chammas shared her insights on the 'Role of women in building diverse and equitable workspaces', pointing out how women leaders and organizations need to work together cohesively to execute sustainable development efforts.

According to the Gender Inequality Index of the UN Development Program's Human Development Report 2022, the UAE ranked 11th globally. The continuous efforts that the UAE makes to support causes promoting the growth and development of women are exemplary. BOWLD 4 witnessed immense support from the local community of Emirati women who joined hands with members of the expat community to create significant strides in the empowerment of women. The previous editions of BOWLD explored topics like Women in Corporate - Breaking the Glass Ceiling, Women in Leadership - Embracing the New Normal, and Women and Entrepreneurship - Fostering Equality and Growth.

Group CEO of Blue Ocean Corporation Dr. Sathya Menon said, "Our motto is empowerment, and women empowerment is one significant cause. We are happy to contribute to the progression of women through BOWLD which is designed and executed by the female force in Blue Ocean. BOWLD is a one-of-a-kind platform that is designed and executed by the women for the women."

"We strongly believe when women are empowered, the society is empowered. Our women employees form a significant part of our workforce, and we are proud to deliver an amazing initiative like BOWLD through them," added Mr. Abdul Azeez, Group Chairman of Blue Ocean Corporation.
