SRI Format Romania e-Prescription: The first e-prescription that can be used throughout the EU

The transeuropean online doctor service www.private-GP.org has become the first EU-wide user of the "SRI Format Romania" for e-prescriptions. Convenient and secure for patients, simple and user-friendly for pharmacies.

"This means that privateGP doctors can make things even easier for their patients and also provide better security for pharmacies," emphasizes Dr. Martin Kramer, who is responsible for introducing the new technology at privateGP. "The combination of safety and functionality is impressive with the SRI Format e-prescription. One wonders why the bureaucracies of many other EU countries can't get something like this up and running," Dr. Kramer said. "It's not a Porsche from a technical point of view, but it gets you from A to B very quickly, very safely and quite inexpensively," the passionate general practitioner added. Pharmacies don't need new software or equipment.

In fact, the e-prescription service in SRI format is designed in a way that no pharmacy needs any new software or device. Using a QR code, the pharmacist can directly access a secure website via a standard QR reader (e.g., with the camera of any ordinary internet device), log in with the patient's code provided on the prescription, automatically check the authenticity and, after dispensing the medication, register the e-prescription as redeemed with one click. This cancels the prescription for further use latest after 20 minutes.

Alternatively, the pharmacy can simply send the prescription number in the reference line of a normal e-mail to a special invalidation e-mail address stated on the prescription, without providing any further patient data (EU data protection regulation). After receipt of the corresponding e-mail, the prescription number will be automatically read within seconds and registered as redeemed via this route latest after 30 minutes in all layers of the database. The system even sends a confirmation for documentation purposes to the pharmacy when using the e-mail route. It could hardly be simpler and more secure.

However, due to its history of origin, the SRI e-prescription format is not compatible with foreign telematics systems, which are common for national digital prescriptions. Concerns about the possibility of non-transparent EU structures gaining access in the event of a future interconnection of national systems were one of the main reasons for setting up a system under reliable local control. The fact that privateGP is now being used as the first civilian platform (marketed by ONYX Data Verification) is a cause for celebration at privateGP as the SRI Format e-prescription system can be used by any pharmacy in the EU, the UK, the EEA, and even worldwide without the need for any technical upgrades. In addition, all patient data is stored to a very limited extent, naturally in compliance with EU (and other local) data protection legislation.

However, every patient can still get a classic prescription by postal mail if he/she wishes. The e-prescription is a new tool, not a replacement.
