FEEDING PROGRAM FOR THE POOR

One of the emphases of Rotary International for Rotary Year 2007-2008 is Health & Hunger. “HELP OUR YOUNG CHILDREN” (Feed and Treat Needy Children Make a Difference in their Lives) is a joint and continuing project of the Rotary Club of Kalibo, District 3850, Zone IV in cooperation with the Aklan Medical Society.

A total feeding, medical, dental and educational program for young children ages 3-6 years old in depressed areas of the province of Aklan. The beneficiaries are the children of third and second degree malnourished, ages 3-6, and are indigent.

The project is in four (4) cycles in a year (3 months in a place), in one barangay, then move to another barangay.

The objectives/purpose of the project are: 1. To provide supplemental feeding to these children once daily, Monday to Saturday with nutritious food, milk and vitamins as supervised by the nutritionist, midwives, and prepared by the mothers involved.
2. To organize the mothers of these children and train them to prepare cheap nutritious food for their family and educate them on other aspects such as responsible parenthood, family planning, home management etc. 3. To have an initial and weekly medical and dental check up of these
children weight, TB check by PPD, treatment of parasitism etc. 4. To educate these children on hygiene etc and to have reading and story telling and catechism classes as scheduled.

The venue is at the day care centre with prior permit from the barangay and is supervised by area midwives, barangay nutrition scholars and barangay health workers. The feeding is held every daily @ 2:00 to 4:00 P.M.

In addition, partners in service like the Interact Clubs, Rotaract Clubs and Rotary Community Corp is also involved particularly in the educational (literacy) program like a story telling session and teaching the young kids to read and write.

Short classes for mothers are conducted daily by volunteers from our partners in service; Short educational/catechetical classes for the children are also scheduled; Weekly weighing and recording are done by barangay personnel; Other volunteer organizations can visit and help once a week, too; Daily feeding of menu plus fruit or milk and vitamins are encouraged; Monthly general assessment for the first and second month is also done; After the 2nd month and improvements are noted, there will be a month break for the organizing feeding committee to plan and prepare for the next cycle/site/barrio.

No salary or allowance is paid on the volunteers. They do it for the love of service and service to the community in order to meet the goal of our club and the organization as a whole.
