Press release from: German Center for Research and Innovation

Discussion on university-industry collaboration, fostering and commercializing innovation in the U.S. and Germany with Orin Herskowitz and Dietmar Harhoff
on June 25, 2013, at the German Center for Research and Innovation

NEW YORK, NY (June 19, 2013) – University research is a key component of a nation’s capacity for innovation. Increasingly, research universities are being seen as sources of innovation that can drive economic development, as opposed to institutions created exclusively for scientific discovery and teaching. How are universities addressing these competing priorities? Many institutions of higher education have developed successful models for fostering and commercializing their innovations, and regional and national governments have established policies to support such efforts. What are the key lessons to be learned from these models? What are the main factors that support university-industry collaboration? Does a strong focus on commercialization cause other modes of innovation to be neglected?

Join the Chairman of the Expert Commission on Research and Innovation (EFI), Dietmar Harhoff, who advises the German government on its innovation policies, as he discusses models of university-industry collaborations and technology transfer with Orin Herskowitz. Herskowitz is the VP of Intellectual Property and Tech Transfer for Columbia University as well as Executive Director of Columbia Technology Ventures (CTV).

Imke Ehlers-Surur, licensing manager in Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center’s Office of Technology Development, will moderate. Ranjana Kadle, partner at Hodgson Russ LLP, the co-sponsor of this event, will be the introductory speaker.

Date: Tuesday, June 25, 2013, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Location: German Center for Research and Innovation, 871 United Nations Plaza, New York, NY (First Ave., btw. 48th & 49th Streets)

'Tis the Season To Be....Careful
“We’re talking about eating – specifically swallowing,” said Dr. Joel Herskowitz. “Choking is a hazard at any age – not just for young children,” said Dr. Herskowitz, a pediatric neurologist on the Boston University Medical School faculty. “Choking on food accounts for three to four thousand deaths every year in the United States,” he said. “Most of those are adults.” The elderly, age 65 and older, appear to be particularly vulnerable.
