Sustainable Surfstyle Sneakers

Joana Andrade and redo footwear launch a sustainable surfstyle sneaker on kickstarter
Surfer meets shoemaker: From fearfull waves to sustainable sneakers
Ericeira, Portugal/Wiesbaden, Germany: Portugals only female big wave surfer Joana Andrade collaborates with German sneaker start-up redo footwear to surf the sustainable wave
On May 28th, Andrade and redo will launch a kickstarter campaign to collect 10.000 € in funds for redo`s first model which is a sustainable surfsyle sneaker, made in Portugal.
While the sneakers will provide outstanding comfort Joana and redo focused their selection of premium materials on the topic of sustainability.
Some of our materials grow in nature, others went through the process of recycling. They have in common that they help keeping the oceans clean from plastic waste which is of all surfers` interest.
The sneakers will feature outsoles consisting of a fair amount of natural rubber, recycled sockliners, heel counters and toeboxes and laces made from recycled polyester. All leathers will be tanned in a chromium free process which saves a huge amount of water.
Sebastian Riedel, founder of redo: „the whole project started out of a global crisis. It will be fascinating to see how we can turn this into something positive!“
The collaboration has further benefits. It will help to raise funds and awareness for Joanas passion: surfing giant waves.
Women in big waves are still rare for mainly two reasons. First of all: sponsors focus on male athletes.
In addition to that big wave surfing comes with a price: Equipment needed to catch these waves and to guarantee the surfer`s safety – as far as this is possible - is expensive.
With every pair redo sells Joana will get closer to her passion.
Joana Andrade: „Our surf inspired sneakers are super comfy. And yes, we made them as sustainable as posssible!“
Depending on the success of their first model, redo will release further models. All coming with stories about the portuguese surf culture and community.
To get there they will have to reach their initial target of raising 10.000 € on kickstarter.com
