Winston-Salem State University Takes the Lead to Improve Counseling Education with Innovative Data Management Technology

Winston-Salem State University has selected Education Management Solutions’ Total Counseling, an innovative audio-video and data management software solution for counselor training.

Exton, PA (January 17, 2012) Education Management Solutions (EMS) will provide Winston-Salem State University’s (WSSU) Master of Science in Rehabilitation Counseling Program with its Total Counseling solution, a hosted counseling management and skills assessment solution and on-site audio-video capability to capture counseling sessions. WSSU’s Rehabilitation Counseling Program specifically addresses the growing need for professional rehabilitation counselors, especially from culturally diverse backgrounds.

Total Counseling will help the Rehabilitation Counseling Program’s mission to advance the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to work with persons who have physical, mental, or emotional disabilities. According to Program Coordinator of Rehabilitation Counseling, Yolanda Edwards, Ph.D., CRC, “The Total Counseling application will help in enhancing the learning process of counselors-in-training at Winston-Salem by allowing for repeated review of their recorded interviews, the ability to bookmark important segments for discussion and improvement, and measuring counseling competency.”

Total Counseling provides a framework for tracking students’ professional growth and evaluating their knowledge and skills using intutive audio-video recording technology, electronic checklists for assessment, and learning-management processes hosted on a secure environment. It is designed to enable students and educators to upload recorded counseling interviews and store them in a central location for review and research, automate manual tasks such as scheduling rooms and participants, create forms and electronic checklists, score, and generate statistical reports, among others.
