Euro Coin Exchange, the leading buyer of euro coins in the U.S., announced a December 31, 2011 deadline for customers who wish to redeem French Francs and Finnish Markkaa for U.S. dollars.

Kenneth Mitteldorf, the founder and head of U.S. operations for Euro Coin Exchange, made the announcement from the company’s offices near Atlanta, Georgia. “There are millions of old French and Finnish banknotes still in circulation, and many people mistakenly believe that their notes are already worthless. They couldn’t be more wrong. When France and Finland adopted the euro as their official currency, they set an absolute deadline to exchange their old notes. That deadline is roughly 90 days away. To allow us enough time to exchange those bills with the central banks in Paris and Helsinki, we will buy old paper money from France and Finland only until the end of 2011.”

Most French currency issued prior to the adoption of the euro has already expired, but there are still five common notes, ranging from 20 to 500 francs, which can still be redeemed for U.S. dollars. All paper currency from Finland can still be exchanged for dollars. Mitteldorf advised, “This really is your last chance to cash in your old paper money from France or Finland. Some of those notes are still quite valuable. After January 1 you will need to send your notes to Europe and exchange them for euros, and once the February 2012 expiration date passes, those notes will become totally worthless.”

The December 31 deadline does not apply to Euro Coin Exchange’s purchase of other European currencies such as German Marks, Irish Pounds and Spanish Pesetas. “We will continue to exchange most old European currencies for dollars indefinitely,” Mitteldorf said.

On the Euro Coin Exchange website (http://www.webuyeuros.com) the process for exchanging foreign coins and notes by mail is explained in easy-to-understand terms, and the site includes pictures of the coins and notes which can be exchanged. There are multiple payment options, including check and PayPal. Customers in the UK can also select direct-to-your-bank electronic transfer and next day cash-in-your-hand via Royal Mail Special Delivery. For customers who prefer to donate their unwanted foreign currency to charity, Euro Coin Exchange offers several options, with the emphasis on personal choice and flexibility.

Founded by attorney Ken Mitteldorf in Atlanta, Georgia, Euro Coin Exchange is a web-based, mail-order currency exchange providing U.S. businesses and individuals a convenient way to sell their Canadian, British and euro coins for a fair price. The company also buys old (pre-euro) paper currency, and describes itself as being “the currency exchange as close as your computer and convenient as your mailbox.” In addition to dealing in foreign currencies, Euro Coin Exchange buys American coins and mutilated banknotes from overseas currency exchanges and other businesses, and assists those customers with shipping their bulk coins back to the U.S., clearing customs and arranging for secure transportation and deposit into an American bank. In August 2011 Euro Coin Exchange launched its first venture outside the United States when it opened an office near London with a dedicated website (http://www.webuyeuros.co.uk) to serve customers throughout the U.K. who wish to exchange euro coins and notes for pounds.
