Oakland has earned a reputation as a thriving art scene and cultural city. By the numbers,
Downtown Oakland has 161 arts and culture businesses, institutions and nonprofits and 184
murals, according to the Downtown Oakland Specific Plan (DOSP). It's also an area experiencing dramatic development, with thousands of housing units opening or under construction, and intense competition for commercial and office space. Changes to the built environment, along with downtown's changing socio-economic population and gentrification introduce challenges - but also new creative opportunities - to nonprofits, galleries,
venues and other cultural resources.

Oakland Art Murmur is launching a
support and celebration of the many artists, curators and gallerists not only surviving, but
thriving today. Some are new, some planted roots decades ago. The face of Oakland arts may
be evolving - occupying new physical spaces and digital formats - but it's stronger and more
diverse than ever.

Monthly, Oakland Art Murmur will highlight powerful stories of individuals and organizations, shedding light on these vibrant expressions of diversity, culture and community here in Oakland.

The Oakland Originals(TM) Artist Profiles Series will:
? Capture real stories from artists, curators and gallerists to tell their stories in a positive light
? Curate and regularly disseminate stories - in video and written format - across owned and
earned channels
? Lean into current news to talk about local changes in a positive light
