Press release from: Independence University

Salt Lake City, May 20, 2011 - Independence University, one of the leading names in distance education, now offers an Associate of Science in Respiratory Therapy degree. It’s designed to not just provide graduates the skills and technical proficiency required of a respiratory therapy professional, but also to prepare them to sit for their licensing exams.

The program covers a comprehensive range of basic to advanced level courses, research work, and practical training. The topics covered over the course of the degree include anatomy and physiology, patient assessment, psychology, and airway management. Although the scheduled duration of this program is 42 months, students have the option of completing it in as few as 25 months with the FastFlex program.

All the U.S. states except Hawaii and Alaska require respiratory therapists to maintain a license from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC). Upon completion of the degree, graduates are eligible to take both the Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) and Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) exams.

To be eligible to enroll in the degree program, aspirants must:
• Have a high school diploma or a GED® certificate
• Have Internet access and complete an online readiness test
• Score a minimum of 15 (first attempt) or 17 (second attempt) on an entrance test
• Undergo a drug screening and criminal background check with satisfactory results

In addition to this, students have to fulfill certain medical and health requirements before they can start their clinical rotations.
