EMS’ Innovative Simulation Technology Advances Education

(RICHMOND, VA, January 18, 2011) – The Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing has selected Education Management Solutions’ (EMS) simulation software to manage their state-of-the-art skills lab and simulation center in Richmond, Virginia.

With EMS’ SIMXpress, the nursing students at Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing (BSMCON) will receive enhanced didactic teaching of nursing intervention concepts, patient safety, and real-world medical outcomes through repetition, measurement, skills assessment and debriefing. EMS’ simulation application will provide a range of benefits to streamline and enhance BSMCON’s simulation training program from participant, room, and equipment scheduling, to automated notifications of scheduled sessions and lab inventory management. Automated skills evaluation, scoring, and the ability to generate longitudinal reports are seen by faculty as key advantages provided by EMS’ software.

Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing is committed to the progressive advancement of collegiate nursing education in the spirit of academic and clinical excellence. In addition, the college upholds the vision of the Bon Secours Health System by instilling in students the values of compassion and service that distinguish Bon Secours from other healthcare systems. The students of the College have also distinguished themselves on the national NCLEX-RN nursing exam: 100% of students in the last four graduating classes have passed the rigorous exam on their first attempt. High credentialing passing rates, along with the latest technology from EMS, have set standards of excellence that the nursing college seeks to uphold.

“We believe that EMS' simulation management software will enhance the excellent education BSMCON provides by keeping pace with the latest technological advancements in medical simulation and will allow well-developed analytical and assessment skills,” said Holly Pugh, MSHA, BSN, RN-BC, CIN, Manager of Clinical Technologies, Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing.

In addition the simulation expansion will be available to the post-licensure health care community to enhance their critical thinking skills, leading to positive patient outcomes and lower patient mortality. In particular, its use in rural and underserved populations by OB/GYN nurse practitioners will increase skills with low volume, high-risk scenarios.

Bon Secours Richmond Heath System is a national leader in nursing excellence. Two Bon Secours hospitals – St. Mary’s Hospital and Memorial Regional Medical Center – achieved Magnet Recognition® for their nursing teams, one of the most prestigious and coveted designations in the nation awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). They are among five percent of healthcare organizations nationwide to achieve this recognition. “Attainment of Magnet status underscores the strong commitment by Bon Secours’ dedicated nurses to advancing healthcare with an emphasis upon caring, collaborative practice, strong nursing leadership and professional development. The College of Nursing is clearly partnered with our health system in preparing nursing graduates who embody this dedication,” said Melanie Green, PhD., Vice-President and Provost of the College.

Bon Secours Richmond Health System (www.bonsecours.com) is a not-for-profit Catholic health system with four hospitals in the greater Richmond metropolitan area: St. Mary’s, Memorial Regional, Richmond Community Hospital and St. Francis Medical Center, as well as Bon Secours Physicians composed of more than 38 physician practice groups, assisted living, home health and hospice.
