CLAY KETTER, Spider Woods, 2010, C-Print Diasec, Edition 1 of 3, 178 x 241 cm

CLAY KETTER, Spider Woods, 2010, C-Print Diasec, Edition 1 of 3, 178 x 241 cm

Bartha Contemporary London is pleased to announce the participation at Art Cologne – 44. Internationaler Kunstmarkt. The gallery showcase at Booth E30 in Hall 11 / Level 1, will feature seminal works by Jill Baroff, Benjamin Cottam, Clay Ketter and Beat Zoderer. The fair open’s on Tuesday April 20th and will run through to Sunday April 25th.

Jill Baroff’s “Tide Drawings” and sets of “Floating Line Drawings” perfectly illustrate the artist’s unique ability to render iconic works from scientific statistical information and sequential processes. The presentation at Art Cologne follows a group exhibition at the recently reopened Folkwang Museum in Essen. The show featured a body of 31 “Tide Drawings”, which the Museum acquired from the gallery in early 2009.

Renown for his “Dead Artist’s Series” Benjamin Cottam’s intricate silver- and gold-point drawings and revealing “Black Paintings” will feature alongside new “Blue Sky Paintings”. Cottam’s works harbour an anxious undercurrent, which is elevated by engaging the viewer in a journey of discovery as the true subject matter is often hidden or unambiguously implied. This is equally true for his latest idiosyncratic “White Paintings”, which disclose their contents in total darkness. The presentation at Art Cologne coincides with the artist’s solo show at the gallery.

Ahead of Clay Ketter’s forthcoming solo-show at the gallery (Private View Thursday May 13), Bartha Contemporary is delighted to present the first works from the artist’s current ‘Tract’ Series at Art Cologne. A suite of digital works based on satellite imagery, which the artist manipulates to create ‘perfect’ habitats. “Spider Woods” a work featuring an implausible but perfectly groomed Golf Course is surrounded by a concentric village housing development. This unattainable vision forms the centrepiece of the installation.

Beat Zoderer’s outstanding suite of 12 entangled works entitled “Properly Wrong Knots” - recently exhibited at the gallery - will now feature at the fair alongside selected works by the artist. Continuing his trademark playful use of everyday materials in his accomplished, often geometric works, Zoderer cleverly undermines the dogmatic single-mindedness of post-war European constructivism by turning its inherent concepts on their head. An other highlight of our presentation at Art Cologne includes Zoderer’s recent Eternit sculptures, which complete the installation.

Bartha Contemporary was founded in 2000, the gallery first rtraded from the owners' private home. It soon moved to its current location in Notting Hill. Early exhibitions include a survey of 70's Finnish constructivism, an exhibition of printed works by Agnes Martin as well as two group-show, which provided contemporary artists the opportunity to juxtapose their work with ancient Chinese objects from the stock of Ben Janssens Oriental Art.
Recently the gallery has been instrumental in the publication of Clay Ketter's 'Gulf Coast Slabs Series; a body of photographic works documenting traces of homes swept away by hurricane Katrina. In early 2009 the gallery exhibited the works of Böhm Leblan and Staudt of the Nouvelle Tendance movement a precursor to Zeor and Op-Art. The exhibition underlined the gallery's continued interest in showcasing work by contemporary artists alongside work from the 20th Century art movements, many largely unknown to a UK audience.
