(openPR) - The mesothelioma law firm Weitz & Luxenberg recently obtained settlements currently totaling $461,000 for a Navy veteran suffering from asbestos-related lung cancer. The man had enlisted in the Navy in 1957 and served as a boilerman aboard the USS Lake Chaplain, an aircraft carrier. In 1960, the ship underwent a complete boiler room overhaul that required the removal of asbestos-containing wrapping that insulated the aircraft carrier's heating and plumbing systems.
The man recalled "Asbestos insulation was removed from all the ship's steam lines to check every gasket and valve to make sure they were ok. It was a very dusty job." Asbestos exposure frequently occurs when workers inhale airborne asbestos fibers present in a work area. Asbestos fibers become airborne when asbestos-containing products are disturbed e.g. by cutting or hammering.
Sadly, many work environments are contaminated with airborne asbestos fibers. Workers at risk of on-the-job asbestos exposure include mechanics, boilermakers, pipe fitters, construction workers and sheet metal workers. The injustice of being diagnosed with an asbestos illness is that in many cases, companies knew about the dangers of asbestos but failed to provide employees with protective equipment such as masks. As a result, thousands of people are diagnosed with asbestos cancers such as mesothelioma and lung cancer every year in the U.S.
People suffering from mesothelioma and asbestos-related lung cancer should be aware that their cancer was most likely caused by asbestos exposure they encountered at jobs they held decades ago. Mesothelioma and asbestos-related lung cancer patients may be entitled to file a lawsuit to receive financial compensation for their fatal illness.
