Echoing Time by Michelle Stojic takes readers on a dynamic journey throughout time and space. This fantastic tale mixes science fiction, archaeological exploration, history, and the soul’s journey to create a unique and complex novel. Stojic builds an in-depth spiritual and corporeal world, utilizing lost souls, modern humans, and even aliens. Perhaps the most striking aspect of this book is how well-researched it is. The archaeological digs are detailed and accurate; Stojic discusses important—and often holy—artifacts which most readers have probably never heard of; and the novel incorporates important historical events and figures, including Hitler’s search for holy relics and Rasputin’s influence over the czarina.
Even the characters themselves are diverse and described in great detail. Stojic’s cast ranges from the jokester, Finnish/Sami scientist Miles Jakison and the multi-talented Arapaho forensic paleontologist Windsong to the spiritual Weyen fey and Trillem Oornek. Multiple ethnicities, races, religions, and nationalities are represented in this novel, a refreshing change of pace from the typical monotone of the voices usually present in science fiction. Furthermore, each character is thoroughly developed with their own distinct personality and history, even the more minor human characters introduced in the archaeological dig.
As suggested by the title, Echoing Time, the story does not truly end. Rather, it is circular, both a conclusion and a beginning with the promise of more to come for these characters; their stories are not over and will not be over until they have fulfilled their individual destinies. Fortunately, this book is only the first in The Woohox Chronicles. Echoing Time sets the rest of the series up very well, and readers will long to get their hands on the next instalment.
Science fiction lovers, especially fans of such authors as Ursula K. Le Guin, should jump at the chance to read this book. At the intersection of entertainment and socio-political commentary, Echoing Time will enthrall readers and make them think. Be warned: once readers pick it up, they might not put it down until they see how the entire story unfolds.
