The United States has the most expensive healthcare prices in the world.

If you are considering medical tours for your next medical procedure this article to follow should be helpful for you making your decision. There is a great deal of data and statistics about medical tourism, While we know places such as Mexico and India can give you images of back-alley operations. This simply isn’t the case in places like Thailand and Germany. These countries have a fantastic medical infrastructure and internationally trained doctors and nurses.

You can also expect better care and a more holistic approach placed on your care than most of the time in the United States. For example, let us take total hip replacement surgery. In the USA for a THR your hospital stay is 1 to 2 nights max! In Germany, for example, your hospital stay is 7-10 night in a luxury medical facility.

NOC ORTHO hopes the following information helps you to feel more confident considering medical tourism as an option for your next procedure.

Over 1.4 million leaving the county for health care.

The medical tourism industry has historically defined medical tourism as the process of traveling outside one’s local area of residence for the purpose of receiving medical services. This excluded emergent care and unplanned care for illness sought by travelers as well as wellness complementary to medical services.

The medical tourism service industry provides a noble one. It is making people healthy, whole and happy again while offering these medical services for less money and better quality of care than the patients home country.

Currently, Americans make up the largest number of medical tourists with over 1.4 million leaving the county for health care. 11.3% of Americans are not able to afford health insurance. Percent of persons under age 65 uninsured in the USA 2017: 10.4%

China is expected to surpass American medical tourists by 2025. Chinese currently have over 500,000 leaving China for medical treatment in other countries.

The Chines, seek physical checks in Japan and the USA, anti-aging injections in Switzerland, eye care and bone treatment in Germany, cosmetic surgery in Korea or Thailand or Japan, and assisted reproduction in the USA or Europe.

A surprising 51 percent of patients spend USD $10,000-50,000 and 16 percent spending USD $50,000-100,000. 40% of all patients are self-paying.

Prior studies reflect the largest volume of patients consuming dental and cosmetic services now this trend reflects 72 percent traveling for orthopedics and oncology and this likely contributes to the higher per patient spending.

According to research, reasons for overseas trips:
Serious disease treatment 40%
Health checks 25 %
Cosmetic surgery 13%
Reproduction assistance 10%
Pediatric treatment 7%

27.7 percent of patients live in the U.S.A. Almost 16 percent are from the United Arab Emirates. Close behind and in third place are residents of the United Kingdom.

72 percent traveling for orthopedics and oncology.

hip and knee

40 percent of patients are traveling to the United States for their medical needs. Germany is in second place at 16 percent with Turkey in third at 12 percent. India and the United Kingdom are close behind at around 10 percent. Turkey is seeing a big trend down in the number of people traveling for medical tourism to the country over the last two years.

Almost half of the patients who leave their home to receive medical care do so because they feel they can receive higher quality healthcare in another country. 22 percent travel outside their country because the cost of health care in their own country is too high.

The United States has the most expensive healthcare prices in the world. For example, a bypass surgery in the U.S. costs approximately $75,000. The second highest country is Australia at $42,000. A total hip replacement costs in the USA average over $40,000 and can reach a price of $75,000.

54 percent of the patients are referred to a health care provider by a Medical Tourism Facilitator/insurance company or the government. 16 percent are referred by a physician. 22 percent of patients are self-directed finding a provider either by doing Internet research or via word of mouth.

22 percent travel outside their country because the cost of health care in their own country is too high.

Almost 80 percent of the patients spend between one and four weeks abroad for their procedure. This number is almost evenly split between those who spend 1-2 weeks and those who spend 2-4 weeks at their destination. 11 percent spend more than four weeks abroad. The length of stay helps demonstrate the care that is given to the traveling patients. It is NOT just a come for treatment and make you leave as fast as possible. The care provided to the medical tourist is usually a higher standard and better experience than in their home country.

86 percent of patients do bring family members with them on their medical travel trips. Almost 75 percent of that group brings one companion with them and the rest travel with 2-3 family members or companions.

77.6 percent of people choose their international healthcare provider based on either the doctor or hospital’s background, experience, and reputation. The cost of the procedure is the lowest priority with only 4 percent considering that a primary choice.

The safety of the destination is paramount with 63 percent choosing this option when deciding where patients want to travel for their procedures. Tourism attractions and similar language/culture are also considered important when choosing appropriate destinations.
