The Real Deadwood Podcast

The Real Deadwood Podcast

London, U.K., August 11th, 2006 – A Black Hills web-based program has been recognized by The Times of London as its Podcast of the Week.

Produced by Deadwood resident and Black Hills State University professor Paul Dennis Kopco, the Real Deadwood Podcast provides an on-line link to the real town for listeners around the world and provides interviews, entertainment and news from both Deadwood, S.D., and the award-winning HBO original series Deadwood.

“Many a fan of the modern western rued the day that HBO announced that there was to be no fourth series of Deadwood,” The Times stated on its website this week. “However, thanks to the Real Deadwood Podcast we can gain closure.”

England’s largest newspaper added, “This podcast combines interviews, entertainment and news from both the fictional and real towns. The TV Deadwood may yield chats with stars such as Robin Weigert, who played Calamity Jane, while in the real world there are interviews with a director of the Adams Museum and House, and a city commissioner who works in PR and advertising. What you get is a fully rounded snapshot of a place brimming with history.”

Producer Paul Kopco and local chamber officials lauded the publicity that The Times accolades have already produced and Kopco said he’s experienced increased traffic on his locally produced podcast.

“Developing this podcast has been a labor of love,” Kopco said. “To have The Times of London give us some measure of distinction and recognition is incredibly heart-warming and makes me extremely proud.”

Deadwood Chamber of Commerce Executive Director George Milos agreed and said The Real Deadwood Podcast has given people around the world a real-life connection to the Black Hills community.

“HBO’s Deadwood has created incredible interest in not only our town, but western history as well,” Milos said. “Through in-depth interviews, news bulletins and entertainment features, Paul has produced a first-rate podcast that fans around the globe can access at their leisure simply by linking to it on the web. This distinction from The Times will undoubtedly increase awareness of the program and our community and encourage thousands of United Kingdom residents to explore the real place. That’s good for all of us.”

The Times has been at the forefront of British journalism since it was founded as The Daily Universal Register in 1785. More than two hundred years later, The Times has been one of the newspaper success stories. Since 1993, its sales have almost doubled and daily readership now exceeds 1.3 million people.

Kopco created the audio podcast in November 2005, added video in July, and has produced 22 episodes to date. Among those interviewed have been Robin Weigert, who portrays Calamity Jane on the hit HBO show, John Hawkes (Sol Star), W. Earl Brown (Dan Dority), as well as background players on the series. In addition, interviews have involved Deadwood City Commissioner Nyla Griffith, Deadwood Economic Development Director Chuck Turbiville, and Mary Kopco and Jerry Bryant of the Adams Museum, among others.

Kopco also involved his son, Alex, in several “sound-seeing tours” that explore the characters buried in Mt. Moriah Cemetery.
