National Immunization Month: Shots Aren’t Just for Kids

07-26-2017 01:36 PM CET | Health & Medicine

Press release from: Envolve

It’s National Immunization Month and the perfect time to remind family, friends and coworkers about the benefits of adult vaccinations. The health experts at Envolve, an integrated healthcare solutions company, have put together a few tips to help you protect your health – and the health of those around you.
1. Keep Records. Document immunizations you receive and store the information in a safe place. Having an accurate record can save you time and money by preventing the need for unnecessary vaccinations. Consult with your primary care provider if you can’t find your personal records to make sure you’re current on shots.

2. Stay Current. Even if you were fully vaccinated as a child, some immunizations like tetanus require “boosters” to remain effective. Depending on your age and health conditions, you may also be at risk for various diseases that can be prevented or have their effects lessened through vaccination. And there are also shots for things like the flu that are needed on a yearly basis. Wondering “Should I get vaccinated?” Check with your healthcare provider to find out which vaccines can help you remain your healthiest.

3. Don’t Worry. Many people worry about getting shots, but there isn’t reason to. Vaccines are tested under strict regulations before they are deemed safe for use. Few people experience side effects from immunizations, and those who do, usually experience mild and temporary ones like soreness or redness where the shot was given. Speak with your healthcare provider about any concerns you have about a particular immunization for adults.

4. Travel Safe. Before jet setting on an international trip, make sure you know what vaccinations may be needed. Certain countries may expose you to diseases your current shots don’t protect you from, so make sure you receive the required or recommended immunizations for where you are traveling. Try not to wait until the last minute as some adult vaccinations can take several days or even weeks to take effect. The CDC’s website (https://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/index.html) is a great resource to make sure you’re covered.

5. Be Aware. Staying up to date with vaccines is especially important to help avoid common illness like the flu and whooping cough that can have serious effects on those around you, especially children and those who suffer from asthma, diabetes or heart disease. Recommended adult vaccinations can vary based on your age, medical history and even your work conditions. You may need a pneumococcal and shingles vaccine. Ask your healthcare provider to fill you in on what you need to stay current and keep yourself and those around you healthy.
