Lateral flow tests or immunochromatographic assays are conducted using simple devices in order to detect the presence (or absence) of a target analyte in a sample (matrix) without the need for specialized and costly equipment. Lateral flow test kits contains capillary beds such as sintered polymer or porous paper. Capillary beds consist of a sample pad that holds sample fluid and a conjugate pad. The conjugate pad is preloaded with conjugate that is dried form of bioactive substance that enables chemical reaction between target molecule (antigen) and its chemical partner (antibody) while the sample pad holds the sample fluid. Lateral flow tests are designed to deliver diagnostic results without proper laboratory setup. Typically, these tests are used for medical diagnostics either for home testing, point of care testing, or laboratory use. Lateral flow diagnostic tests or immunochromatography tests are diagnostic tests that deliver results in shortest timeframe.
