Tourism, Mining and Indigenous Affairs in the Northern

For a seventh consecutive year, the 7th Annual NT Major Projects Conference convenes again at the Darwin Convention Centre on the 6-7th November. This comes as the NT Government has invested $1.7 billion in strategic infrastructure projects to improve public facilities and create jobs in the area. Chief Executive David McHugh from the NT Government’s Department of Infrastructure will address delegates on the state of projects underway.
Other topics on the agenda include an investigation into reenergising mining and exploration in the NT. Executive Director Drew Wagner of Minerals Council Australia will discuss ventures enabling this proposal including the $100 million investment to reboot the mining sector in the NT and a future plan to explore un-mined land.
The conference will see a panel discussion on the topic of tourism and the shared economy. Panellists will address ideas of tourism as a new driver of the NT’s economy, shared economy accommodation and the risks and challenges of disruptive applications. Panellists include Associate Professor in Northern Australia Development Pascal Tremblay from Charles Darwin University, Chairman – Business Advisory Council Rachel Beaumont-Smith from the NT Government and of Vice Chair – Tourism Top End and Professor of Tourism Sara Dolnicar from the University of Queensland Business School.
As over $100 million is set to be invested in tourism infrastructure across the Northern Territory, the conference will examine opportunities for tourism development in NT such as roads, national park infrastructure and urban precinct development. Future opportunities to invest within the growing tourism industry will be discussed as well as the Lee Point Urban Coastal tourism development opportunity.
The conference will also include a presentation on the $500 million Larrakeyah Base Redevelopment Project discussing planning and delivery stages. The project scope includes upgrading engineering services, providing new buildings and multi-user facilities.
As the National Native Title Tribunal President, Raelene Webb QC will provide in depth analysis of effective Indigenous engagement, an important area of growth in the North’s infrastructure outlook and highlight of the conference agenda. Effective indigenous engagement not only leads to less risk and higher returns in investment, but it also builds social capital which is something increasingly expected from companies. When done well, indigenous engagement lays the foundation for genuine and mutually beneficial partnerships in which Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices are heard and respected.
The world’s largest aquacultural development, the $1.5 billion Project Sea Dragon, will cover 10 000 hectares of land with land-based prawn production ponds. The aquaculture project in Northern Australia is designed to produce high-quality, year-round reliable volumes for export market. Sea Dragon facilities will include a Genetics Breeding Program & Multiplication Centre, hatchery, feed mill processing plant, grow out ponds and harvesting and processing plants. Executive Director Dr Chris Mitchell of Seafarms Group Limited will discuss potential investment opportunities and economic benefits for the NT community.
Attracting $1.5 Billion Investment in the form of the NT Infrastructure Development Fund will form another key topic on the agenda. The NT Infrastructure development fund is a private board, now fully operational with the aim of attracting $1.5 billion of private investment. The session will answer questions such as how the Fund plans to be a self-sustaining pool of capital, and look at growth and investment opportunities within the Fund.
Annual NT Major Projects Conference delegates will have the chance to hear about all the latest developments from high profile speakers and experts leading immersive and comprehensive presentations, panel discussions and Q&A sessions on the 8th and 9th of November when the conference assembles at the Darwin Convention Centre.
