Queensland Transport Infrastructure Conference supports growing transport infrastructure sector

The 7th Annual Queensland Transport Infrastructure Conference was held last week at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre to an audience of more than 200 delegates.
The conference signifies the transport infrastructure sector’s growing commitment towards the sharing of knowledge and industry best practices on some of the state’s largest transport projects.
Featuring more than 20 key speakers from a range of industry professionals from within the transport infrastructure sector, Chief Executive Officer of Nexus Infrastructure Pty Ltd, John Hagan, gave a presentation on the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing Project.
The conference covered topics on the Caloundra Road to Sunshine Motorway Upgrade Project, Port of Townsville Upgrade, the Gold Coast Airport Redevelopment, as well as presentations on the future of driverless cars within Queensland.
Technical, Certification and Engineering Manager at Volvo Car Australia, David Pickett, provided a presentation on the future potential of driverless cars, iterating the importance of public perception on driving initiatives forward.
“Volvo is working towards driverless vehicles and the progression of getting to that stage relies on how the public reacts towards them. We’ve been working on autonomous breaking systems, which plans a huge part in our long term safety plan,” Pickett said.
Volvo Car Australia has plans to allow 100 self-driving cars drive 100 people in 2017, even designing cars to circumvent wildlife collisions, which are expected to cost Australian consumers in excess of $75 million each year.
Stage Two of the Gold Coast Light Rail was also discussed at the conference with Executive Director of the Commonwealth Games, Department of Transport and Main Roads, Grant Morris, providing a presentation on transport infrastructure for the Games.
The project aims to construct an additional 7.3 kilometres of light rail line and develop three new stations in Helensvale, Parkwood and Parkwood East, providing more than 1000 new car space facilities for spectators during the event.
Director General of the Department of Transport and Main Roads Queensland, Neil Scales, gave a keynote address on day one of the conference, providing an overview of the government’s role in promoting transport infrastructure.
The discussion of these projects come in addition to the $500 million State Infrastructure Plan announced in March; the Queensland government’s four year $35 billion commitment towards infrastructure.
Day two of the conference featured a lively panel discussion on the topic of Discussing Innovative Ways of Funding Transport Infrastructure Projects for Queensland, with speakers Flavio Menezes, Joe Langley and Mark White.
The conference facilitated more than six hours’ worth of networking opportunities for delegates, offering valuable insight for transport infrastructure professionals, operators, contractors, consultants and investors.
