Oscar winner Denzel Washington to portray ancient military commander Hannibal
To tell the story of Hannibal, who is remembered as a brilliant strategist in the history books, screenwriter John Logan (62) has been enlisted. Logan has written scripts for blockbusters such as "The Aviator" with Leonardo DiCaprio (49), the Bond films "Skyfall" and "Spectre," as well as Ridley Scott's (85) epic film "Gladiator." The screenwriter is well-versed in epic tales and battles.
The Netflix film currently does not have an official title. However, according to "Variety," a brief synopsis has already been released. The film is based "on the real warrior Hannibal, widely regarded as one of the greatest military commanders in history. The movie covers the key battles he fought against the Roman Empire during the Second Punic War."
The famous Alps crossing
One of Hannibal's most famous maneuvers is his crossing of the Alps: reportedly with over 50,000 soldiers, almost 10,000 cavalry, and, as a special deterrent, nearly three dozen war elephants. He brought the Roman Empire to the brink of collapse around 200 BC before he could be defeated.
Washington and Fuqua have collaborated on several films before, including the crime thriller "Training Day" and all three "Equalizer" installments. They will co-produce the announced Hannibal project together. A targeted release date has not been announced yet.
