ST MICHAEL CHURCH TO GIVE HUNDREDS OF FREE TURKEYS TO LIVERMORE RESIDENTS IN NEED

Volunteers at St Michael Community Care Food Pantry will distribute turkeys, whole chickens, and ingredients for classic holiday side dishes free of charge to families on November 18, from 8:00 am - 9:00 am behind the church at 458 Maple Street.

St Michael Catholic Church's "Community Care" food pantry is stocked up and ready to make Thanksgiving a little more joyous for several hundred Livermore residents who are struggling with food insecurity. Dennis Lundbom, operations manager, says he has ordered 200 turkeys and 200 whole chickens along with stuffing, cranberry sauce and other holiday staples. He's preparing for a crowd.

"Every Saturday, we serve around 400 families (or 950 people) who are struggling financially. Nearly all of them live here in Livermore. We expect a huge turnout for turkeys!" Since Community Care is an agency of the Alameda County Community Food Bank, Lundbom was also able to order an extra-large delivery of fresh produce for the holiday distribution. He's hoping there will be enough to go around.

"Donations have been less this year to the food bank, so we're feeling it too. The need from our residents seems to be greater. Luckily, the parish and local community has also been generously giving to the holiday food drive to supplement."

Thanksgiving turkeys and other holiday ingredients will be distributed on Saturday, November 18, from 8:00 am to 9:00 am while supplies last. Lundbom expects a long line and suggests getting there early.

St Michael Community Care was founded as a ministry of St Michael Catholic Church in August of 2020, as a response to the pandemic fueled economic crisis in Livermore. In those early months, the food pantry was a drive through serving around 100 people. Now, around 40 volunteers set up an outdoor "farmers market" like venue behind St Michael Church every Saturday morning where hundreds of clients shop for what they need most. Additionally, volunteers deliver free groceries to homebound seniors in the area. The pantry opens at 8:00 am, and often all the food is gone by 9:00 am.
