CO-EVOLUTION – the award winning Danish contribution to the Architecture Biennale in Venice 2006 - is now on display at the 7th Sao Paulo International Biennial of Architecture in Brazil. After Venice, the Sao Paulo biennial is the most important architecture biennial in the world.

Since Brazil hosted the first UN conference on the environment in 1992, the
international focus on sustainability has been constantly increasing, and leading up to the 2009 UN Climate Summit in Denmark, we wish to contribute to this global debate by presenting four visionary projects for sustainable urban development in four of the largest Chinese cities.

People all over the world are moving to cities in pursuit of a better life. In China alone, during the past 20 years some 400 million people have sought to escape rural poverty by moving to the cities. And for the first time in human history, more than half of the world’s population now lives in cities. However, urbanization and new urban lifestyles also exert tremendous pressure on the environment, both locally and globally.

Through collaborations between Danish architects and Chinese professors and students, the CO-EVOLUTION exhibition confronts the challenges related to rapid and extensive urbanization in China. But the idea behind CO-EVOLUTION does not only apply to China. To achieve sustainable development and better living conditions for the many, we must learn from each other and share our ideas, experiences and know-how. We believe that the only way to do that is through international and interdisciplinary collaboration. The CO-EVOLUTION exhibition demonstrates how much we depend on each other in finding global solutions to environmental challenges.

The exhibition presents new models for holistic, large-scale, urban planning; integrating local needs, knowledge and low-tech solutions with cutting-edge expertise and futuristic technologies. Furthermore, the four projects confront a wide variety of economic, environmental, social and cultural issues related to China’s urbanization. The exhibition illustrates the value of sharing knowledge, ideas and experiences across borders.
