Analytiqa: Logistics Bulletin: Friday 26th October

10-29-2007 01:02 PM CET | Logistics & Transport

Press release from: Analytiqa

This week's Logistics Bulletin is dominated by Q3 results from some of the sector's largest players and contract wins. Kuehne + Nagel has reported strong Q3 turnover and profit growth. At 20.4%, contract logistics turnover growth outperformed the market three-fold. Ryder reported Q3 Supply Chain revenues up 8.0%, primarily due to new and expanded business, particularly in international markets (outside of the US). At UPS, Q3 results were driven by Supply Chain & Freight and International operations. Forwarding and logistics revenue rose 4.7% to US$1.49 billion.

Among the many recent contract wins, DHL Exel Supply Chain has won business in the automotive and retail sectors. Also in retail, in the UK, Home Delivery Network Limited has won a contract with John Lewis, to handle over one million parcels each year. Staying in the UK, Wincanton has signed a 10-year logistics contract with Carlsberg, whilst in the US Heineken has outsourced logistics activity to drinks specialist Satellite Logistics Group. Elsewhere, there were contract wins for Bibby Distribution, Geodis, Ryder and Kuehne + Nagel.

Asia-Pacific to drive freight traffic growth to 2011

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has released freight traffic forecasts projecting that in 2011 the air transport industry will handle 36.0 million tonnes of international freight (7.5 million tonnes more than in 2006).

International freight volumes are expected to grow at an AAGR of 4.8% over the forecast period, supported by economic growth, globalisation and trade. Strong price competition from other modes of transport is expected to keep freight demand growth below the 6.2% AAGR recorded for 2002-2006.

Asia Pacific is expected to lead freight growth with an AAGR of 5.4% over the period. Seven of the top ten freight markets fall within the region: China (10.8%), India (8.3%), Republic of Korea (8.2%), Vietnam (7.5%), Sri Lanka (6.8%), Pakistan (6.7%) and Malaysia (6.2%). The Middle East will see the second highest growth at 5.0%. The fastest growing Middle Eastern markets are expected to be Qatar (6.9%) and Saudi Arabia (6.2%).

Freight to/from and within Asia Pacific will account for 57.0% of the 36.0 million tonnes of international air freight volume in 2011, up from 55.0% in 2006. As most volume will be outbound from Asia, IATA noted concerns about the impact of imbalances in global trade patterns on the industry.
