Press release from: SGS Industrial Services

A new service has been launched by SGS to help the construction industry adopt and manage the revolutionary new Building Information Modeling (BIM) platform.

In order to help the industry manage the flow and quality of information in the BIM process, in addition to general project management (http://www.sgs.com/en/Construction/Project-Management.aspx) duties, such as cost, schedule and communications management, the company has developed the BIM Project Management service. As an emerging technical tool – one that is heralded as the next generation of computer aided design and construction after 2D CAD drawing – design and construction teams are still in the process of integrating and implementing the technology into everyday practice.

Managing the quality of the BIM process is becoming increasingly vital to any construction project, but BIM implementation can cause as many complications as the problems it solves if used without the necessary planning or experience. As a result, due to the fact that the construction industry prides itself on experience and hands-on technical ability, adoption of the new innovation is slow compared to other industries.

That is why SGS now offers design and construction (http://www.sgs.com/en/Construction/Project-Management/Services-During-Design.aspx) teams practical BIM project management, implementation strategy and transitional training.

The new SGS BIM Project Management service provides the construction industry (http://www.sgs.com/en/Construction.aspx) with the proper methodology and protocol for managing the BIM process. Consequently, clients will now be able to adopt the BIM platform and benefit from a range of project improvements, including increased construction quality and building performance, reduced construction costs and waste, in addition to mitigating project risks and delays.

With its dedicated BIM team, unrivalled construction experience and building simulation expertise, SGS also offers a supporting team of professional engineers verifying the accuracy of BIM output and a complete range of dedicate services, including:

- Construction BIM Project Management – building construction life-cycle management (including 4D project schedule simulation, systems clash detection, BIM model verification and BIM model construction for MEP)
- BIM Education Services – construction management or building environmental simulation
- Building Environmental Simulation – Including Building Energy Modeling (BEM), Computation Fluid Dynamics Simulation (CFD), daylight and envelope shading simulation, lighting simulation and rendering

BIM – what is it?

BIM is a next-generation digital platform that can be used to create and represent the physical and functional characteristics of infrastructure and buildings. BIM is used to produce 3D models, however BIM tools also serve to aid design and construction decisions throughout the construction life cycle (http://www.sgs.com/en/Construction/Project-Management/Services-During-Construction.aspx).

BIM is essentially a tool for everyone – from architect and general contractor to each design team for individual systems, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing and even facility management. It is revolutionary in that anyone can write a plugin for the BIM platform that can provide a specific task or service.

SGS is the world’s leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company. SGS is recognized as the global benchmark for quality and integrity. With more than 80,000 employees, SGS operates a network of over 1,650 offices and laboratories around the world.
