Strikingly Sparse Images of Jane Richardson at Agora Gallery

10-23-2012 07:29 PM CET | Arts & Culture

Press release from: Agora Gallery

For the painter Jane Richardson, color and texture conjure evocative images of landscapes, city streets and human figures. Applied with palette knives and trowels, her paints meld sharp, straight edges and rounded lines to create movement and stillness in her generally abstract compositions. Many of her large paintings evoke landscapes, whether verdant natural vistas or fragmented urban scenes. Her bold expressionist aesthetic begins from a foundation of scraped, quasi-geometric forms, atop which are layered playful drips and thick swirls. She manipulates the ridges and crevices of paint created by her knife masterfully, suggesting the subtle outlines of figures or objects.

Born and based on Canada’s temperate, lush west coast, Richardson cites the vibrancy of her immediate surroundings as an especially important source of inspiration. Many of her compositions reflect this plentiful environment, with clumps, slices and carved wedges of color filling the picture plane. Impressively, Richardson manages also to create strikingly sparse images, her versatility equally evident in her most arresting and muted scenes.
