Press release from: Chance & Bridge Partners

Beijing, China July 30, 2012 – An Outbound Investment Seminar hosted by Chance & Bridge Partners drew a large audience of investors, Chinese SMEs, and international partner law firms.

Many Chinese investors and companies are looking to diversify their holdings and enter new markets. This has led to an increase in cross-border investment, banking, consulting, and legal services for the Chinese clients. Many of these areas were addressed during the seminar and attention was paid to some of the most pressing issues, such as market entry strategies and regulations and antitrust/competition law, for Chinese firms and investors looking abroad.

According to Ms. Ning Zhu, Managing Partner of Chance & Bridge Partners, “outbound investment by Chinese companies has grown significantly in the past several years because of a pursuit of new markets, acquisition of international brands in order to expand into international markets, capturing strategic resources, and after the financial crisis Chinese firms have been able to pick up underpriced assets”. Ms. Zhu also commented on that fact that Chinese firms are finding it much more difficult to expand into the US and EU because of the strict regulatory regimes. The barriers posed by the culture differences, different management styles and quality, and unwillingness to seek professional consulting advice, has caused additional problems for Chinese firms looking to invest abroad.

Dr. Zhaofeng Zhou, Partner with Chance & Bridge Partners, said that “more than 80 countries and regions, including China, have adopted merger control rules. This makes it imperative that Chinese companies be aware of the merger control issues both in China and beyond when they invest abroad. Ignoring the relevant merger control rules could lead to the failure of the overseas investments”.
