Press release from: Long Island Psychology, PLLC

Dr. Atara Wertentheil of Long Island Psychology offers therapy and support in Rockville Centre and Garden City, NY for issues related to women and their range of experiences.

Rockville Centre, NY – As more and more people struggle with their mental health, those that are seeking help often find it difficult to connect with psychologists that are able to meet their needs.

The APA and the National Institute of Mental Health have found that there are gender differences in both the experiences and presentation of mental health issues between women and men. It is these differences that have prompted Long Island Psychology to offer mental health treatments specifically for issues that affect women, to help open the door for a more personalized treatment approach.

“Women often have different struggles and life experiences than men,” said Rockville Centre therapist Dr. Atara Wertentheil. “Psychological treatments benefit from situations where the client feels like they’re being heard, and so we decided to adjust our specialties to help women feel that they’re getting support for the issues that they struggle with and are unique to their subjective experiences.”

Dr. Wertentheil cites many experiences that are either specific to women or more common in women, such as:

- Motherhood Challenges
- Succeeding as Professional Women
- Disordered Eating & Body Positivity
- Women’s Health Struggles
- Family Planning and Fertility Challenges
- Maintaining a Work/Life Balance
- Pregnancy Anxieties / Postpartum Depression

While not all of these are specific to women, they are more likely to affect women in ways that are damaging to mental health. “Women are more likely to suffer from anxiety, depression, and stress related challenges,” says Dr. Wertentheil. “Part of the reason for this is that societal and emotional expectations are different, and the social and cultural factors at play are not always understood or addressed within the process of navigating women’s concerns. We hope specializing in these challenges will encourage more women to seek psychotherapy when they feel they need help.”

Dr. Wertentheil and Dr. Marc Shulman operate at two locations on Long Island, one in Rockville Centre, NY and the other in Garden City, NY. They also have remote therapy available via phone or video chat throughout New York State. “We’ve lived through so much over just the past year alone,” says Dr. Wertentheil, “it is important to us that we help women recognize that there are people here that can help them with the issues that affect them the most.”
