Ex-votos paintings in Frida Kahlo Exhibition August 2011
The 25 original Mexican Ex-votos dated from 1918 to 1984 belong to the collection of the Kunstmuseum, and present a kaleidoscope of daily dramas, wishes, dangerous situations where the faith towards a saint or martyr has always helped.
"Ex-Votos" are Catholic religious paintings that became very popular in the Mexican religious culture in the 19th century.
In most cases, the Ex-Voto is signed by the supplicant and dated, and explains why the giver is giving thanks, and in many cases they tell a very touching personal story which is why they are so fascinating.
The Ex-Votos showing now in the Frida Kahlo exhibition tell stories from being saved by a tremendous bull during a bullfight, to having found a wife, to having successfully crossed the border to the US, from being able to sell pancakes in the nearby city to recovering from surgery.
Ex-Votos paintings are a wonderful and unique expression of the Mexican culture.
Frida Kahlo and Diego Riveras had a collection of more than 1000 Ex-Votos which can be seen in the Blue House in Mexico City. The influence of the "Ex-Voto" style of painting can be seen in some of Frida Kahlo’s works.
A special catalogue in four languages is available to the visitors, The Ex-Votos exhibition will last till September 30th, and it is in addition to the permanent exhibition of Frida Kahlo paintings: “Viva La Vida” which shows 116 oil paintings of the Mexican artist. The Kunstmuseum Gehrke-Remund is a privately owned monographic art museum founded in 2008. The Kunstmuseum exhibits only the works of Frida Kahlo. The objective of the Kunstmuseum Gehrke-Remund is to offer the visitors a complete view of the entire work of the Mexican artist, thus allowing to follow Kahlo’s development, to discover the different phases she goes through in her life: from the very early works to her maturity.
The Vision of the Kunstmuseum Gehrke-Remund is to offer the visitors a unique cultural experience that covers all the senses, and an environment that touches not only the eyes of the visitors, but their minds, and above all their hearts.
Every decision made in the creation of the museum was driven by two elements:
respect for the visitors and respect for the artists.
In addition to exhibit the artworks, the Kunstmuseum Gehrke-Remund shows the cultural and historical environment of Frida Kahlo’s life and times in Mexico: Tehuana Huipiles (blouses), jewelry, Mexican votive paintings and the entire context in which the artist lived and produced her work. This 360°view of Kahlo’s life and work allows the visitors to totally immerse themselves into the artworks and to better understand the artist and the Mexican hostory and culture of 1920-1940.
The founders of the Art Museum are Hans-Jürgen Gehrke and Dr. Mariella C. Remund. Both are art patrons, collectors, and passionate art historians.
They have spent over 25 years in executive positions in multinational corporations and academic organizations in Germany, Italy, France, Switzerland, USA, Spain, South America and China.
