Fort Worth Attorney Steven C. Laird Announces $1 Million Court Judgment For Family of Drunken Driving Victim

FORT WORTH – Fort Worth attorney Steven C. Laird is announcing a $1 million court judgment on behalf of the survivors of Lance Shetler, who died in a 2008 automobile crash caused by a drunken driver who had been drinking at Southern Oaks Golf Club in Burleson, Texas.

Evidence in the case showed that Southern Oaks employees sold 12 cans of beer to Mark Charles Pierce, followed by another six beers after he completed his first nine holes of golf. After Mr. Pierce left the golf course, according to the evidence, Southern Oaks employees then served him a mixed drink containing at least one shot of hard liquor, even though he showed signs of obvious intoxication. Mr. Pierce drove from the club and was involved in the wreck that killed Mr. Shetler, 42, a father of three and inventor of medical devices that benefited children.

Mr. Laird says Mr. Shetler’s death and the subsequent court judgment against Southern Oaks should serve as an important lesson that all establishments serving alcohol need to make sure they don’t serve customers to the point of intoxication.

“Our client would still be alive today if this business had followed a policy against over-serving patrons,” says Mr. Laird, founder of The Law Offices of Steven C. The judgment was signed July 8, 2011, by 348th District Court Judge Dana Womack in Fort Worth.
