House Speaker Pelosi to Visit Syria, Imperato Says Bush Should Go Instead

West Palm Beach, FL – March 31, 2007 – As the Bush administration criticized plans by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to visit Syria, Presidential Candidate, Daniel Imperato stood up to applaud Speaker Pelosi efforts but urged that President George W. Bush should be the one that is going to Syria.

"I have been calling for several years for our government to embrace Bashar Al-Assad and the Syrian government. Bashar was placed in a difficult situation that he did not create, when he took the office from his father. He's a young doctor, and had to assume the family legacy of politics. He has tried to do his best, but has received no support from the United States," stated Imperato.

Imperato appreciated Pelosi's gesture of visiting Syria but stated that President Bush is the only person that can make peace with Bashar Al-Assad and Syria.

"Bashar Al Assad has been shut out by the US Government. When he took over for his father, he planned to reach out to the US government during the September 2005 UN General Assembly Meeting. Now it is going to take our leader, President George W. Bush to reopen the relations with Syria. While I applaud the Senators and Speaker Pelosi for trying their best, it needs to be George W. Bush who goes to Syria to work with Bashar to make peace in Israel and make peace in Iraq."

Going back as early as October of 2005, Imperato stated that Bashar Al-Assad has the key to Middle East Peace (See "Imperato Comments on CNN's Christiane Amanpour, Syria…" October 2005. www.daniel2008.com).

At the time the US administration, and most recognized politicians, had turned their backs on Al-Assad , due to the pending UN investigation on the previous administration in Syria and the death of Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Harriri.

Back in January 2006, Imperato offered himself to go to visit Bashar Al-Assad in order to make peace between the United States and Syria. Imperato did not have the opportunity to visit because of national security.

Recently, Syria's President, Bashar Al-Assad, told ABC's Good Morning America last February, that he and Syria could help mediate in Iraq with support from the US and other states in the region.

The Pelosi delegation also includes, among others, House Foreign Affairs Committee chairman Tom Lantos and first-term Minnesota Democrat Keith Ellison, the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Congress.

A group of Senators from both parties visited Damascus in December after the bipartisan Iraq Study Group recommended greater U.S. dialogue with Syria and Iran in efforts to end Iraqi violence.

"I am pleased that the Iraq Study Group has agreed with my recommendations for more relations with Bashar Al-Assad and Syria. However, we must understand what approach must be taken and what we hope to achieve from those relations. We cannot approach Syria as though they are a terrorist state. We must approach them with mutual beneficial respect, and as equals. This is why it is important for our President George W. Bush to visit their President Bashar Al-Assad."
