African American Diabetes Association CEO Responds to Guardian Article on Diabetes Epidemic

[Silver Spring, MD] USA April 27, 2024 - In response to the Guardian's recent article that exposes the alarming truth about the diabetes epidemic in America, The African American Diabetes Association (AADA) Co-Founder and CEO, Leon Rock, issues a call to action. While not directly attacking the American Diabetes Association (ADA), Rock said, "The AADA's goal is to spark a vital conversation about how we can better address this crisis, especially within Black communities."

The Guardian's report reveals a concerning rise in diabetes-related deaths, even amid medical advancements. Shockingly, over 100,000 Americans now die from diabetes each year-nearly triple the 35,000 deaths in 1980. This increase starkly highlights the ongoing struggle of millions who suffer from diabetes complications, with Black communities bearing a disproportionate burden. Rock went on to say, "The AADA agrees with the article's assessment that there is room for the ADA to do more in engaging with those most affected by diabetes." While acknowledging that partnerships with the pharmaceutical industry can be beneficial, Rock said, "the AADA emphasizes the need for transparency and a focus on health equity rather than just financial gain."

The data on diabetes prevalence in Black communities is a call to action. Since the ADA's inception in 1939, the statistics have remained unacceptably high, leading us to ask: why haven't the ADA's efforts led to significant improvements in health equity?

Barbara King, Chair of the AADA Board said, "While the ADA's priorities seem to focus on revenue, the AADA's focus is on the people and their well-being. We are at a turning point, where the voices of communities must be heard, and the needs of those suffering from diabetes must come before profit margins."

Leon Rock emphasized "As an organization dedicated to health equity, the AADA recognizes the complex role of pharmaceutical companies. While they can contribute funding and research, there's a need to maintain objectivity and uphold transparency to ensure that the communities' needs are at the forefront. Navigating this delicate balance, the AADA seeks to find the optimal approach to address diabetes while empowering Black communities. We urge stakeholders from all sectors to join us in this mission, harnessing our collective resources to create meaningful change." He went on to say, "The African American Diabetes Association is committed to leading the charge in transforming the fight against diabetes. It is time for pharmaceutical companies, healthcare providers, and policymakers to step up and work with us to achieve genuine health equity in Black communities."

The African American Diabetes Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness about diabetes and other chronic illnesses that disproportionately impact Black communities. Through education, advocacy, and community engagement, the AADA seeks to address health disparities and improve access to quality healthcare for all.
