Defective LED Lights Pose a Serious Risk of Personal Injury: ALT Safeguards Consumer Safety

Last month, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a recall on 99,000 LED light bulbs that were sold in the US between October 2012 and May 2013. These light bulbs were manufactured in China under a leading lighting company. The main problem was potential shock hazard caused by a lead wire in the bulb’s housing with improper fitting, which can electrify the entire lamp. Recall of LED light bulbs does not seem to be uncommon as the quality of LEDs on the market is yet to be defined and determined.

Earlier this year in March, about 554,000 light bulbs were also recalled by the CPSC. The problem with the recalled LED light bulbs is that they can overheat and pose a fire hazard. There have been 68 reports of incidents of these light bulbs failing with some of the reports indicating fire damage to rugs/carpets, floors, circuitry, and a lamp. Fortunately, fire and smoke damage has been limited and there have been no personal injuries reported.

LED light bulbs are relatively new and still in its developing stage. Along with the newer technologies and trying to keep the cost of production down, it often occurs that some of the newer products enter the marketplace with an unspecified number of defective products. LED light bulbs are developed to save energy, work efficiently and all around raise lifestyle quality whilst being eco-friendly. However, due to hidden defects, the lights can cause property damage and could even be responsible for causing serious injury or death to a homeowner and their family if a fire or severe shock should occur.

Regarding the batch recalled last month (Aug), another major problem is the use of improper insulation materials that a number of manufacturers use to lower cost. In this case, it was found that the power and metal lamp base were merely taped together with heat-resistant tape. And when plastic is used for the lamp casing, which is inefficient for heat dissipation, it creates a high temperature within the lamp that may damage the tape and result in electricity leakage. For insulation material, ALT uses a type of insulation material that completely isolates power from the lamp base, which is ten times more costly but also much safer.

The aluminum fins have been anodized for corrosion and wear resistance; furthermore anodized treatment reduces conductivity for safety insurance. Moreover, most LED manufacturers use non-isolation circuit powers, which do not guarantee safety for consumers due to potential shock hazards. Should this problem be imposed to outdoor or industrial lighting, and if lightning occurs, there may be severe consequences.
